The renovation of Turku Main Library is a remarkable project that demonstrates the synergy between lighting design and architectural integrity. We had the pleasure of collaborating with interior architect Tuomas Lemmetyinen from LPR-arkkitehdit Oy to create a lighting solution that enhances the library’s aesthetic while meeting its functional needs.
Turku Main Library is not just a place for books; it’s a cultural landmark, evolving since its establishment in 1862. The recent renovations blend modern design elements with the library’s historical essence. This unique combination posed an exciting challenge for us—to ensure that our lighting solutions not only fit seamlessly within the space but also elevate the experience for every visitor.
For this, our latest linear L40 models were selected for the library’s shelving. These solid oak fixtures reflect the warmth and elegance of the library's furniture. Featuring microprismatic optics to reduce glare and a 93 CRI, they enhance the appearance of the books with vibrant and natural color reflection. With lengths of up to three meters, these fixtures were combined into continuous lighting solutions that provide uniform illumination along the shelves, improving both visibility and ambiance.
A key aspect of the project was our close collaboration with Tuomas Lemmetyinen and the furniture manufacturer. We developed minimalist mounting and installation hardware to ensure the fixtures integrated flawlessly with the shelving. By carefully matching the oak used in the fixtures with the solid oak of the library’s furniture, we achieved a cohesive aesthetic that underscores the library’s character.
The continuous lighting along the shelves ensures even illumination, ideal for a library setting. This attention to detail makes the space inviting for reading and exploration, fulfilling both practical needs and aesthetic expectations.
Ultimately, the renovation of Turku Main Library showcases how thoughtful lighting design can breathe new life into a public space. The collaboration between TUNTO Lighting, LPR-arkkitehdit Oy, and Tuomas Lemmetyinen resulted in a transformative lighting solution that not only meets the library’s functional demands but also enhances its overall aesthetic. It’s a project that emphasizes the importance of integrating design, function, and user experience to create spaces that inspire and uplift the community.
Designer Mikko Kärkkäinen captured this perfectly: “The fixtures add a sense of value and elegance to the space, highlighting the library’s dignified and serene atmosphere.” This sentiment encapsulates our mission—creating long-lasting lighting solutions that harmonize with their environment while enhancing the ambiance for library visitors.
